Cork – The Urban Arena...

...is a short movie about the mid-summer bonfires in Cork, the largest city in Southern Ireland (150.000).

What may look like some kind of violent riots, is in fact a collective fiery rubbish disposal, which to outside observers may appear a little bizarre. Celebrated annualy, it is a public event for children as well as their parents, and huge piles of waste and other refuse are being gathered days in advance.

As the older participants readily explain, the Bonfire Night, or the 23rd of July, has its roots in an ancient Celtic midsummer ritual.

Accordingly, the mood during the event was quite joyful, instead of purely aggressive, almost as if going to a football match.

Carrying our photo bags, we were immediately associated with news reporters and did not have to ask for any of the photos - especially the younger people were posing in front of the cameras with pleasure.

In the background music, 'Gangsta'-Rapper Ice-T raises his voice:

"But this will be a classic
Many facets to get that ass kicked
The alcoholic Don, call me King Tragic
Watch me speak the magic
Watch me teach that old habit - full of havoc..."
